If we want to go from overwhelmed to overflowing, there are two things we need to start and three things we need to stop. Today we’ll look at the first pair: start being grateful and stop complaining.
Studies have shown that gratitude produces chemicals in our brain – dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin – that makes us feel peaceful and happy. How are you feeling? What do we need to do? Let’s start our day with gratitude. At the moment we wake up, before getting out of bed, think about what we are grateful for. Thank God for the bed, the air we breathe, and especially for Him. I like to begin with Psalm 118:24, “This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” That’s a choice and it can change us and even our brain chemistry.
Philippians 2:14 says, “In everything you do, stay away from complaining and arguing.” Will complaining help? Can we change the weather? Can we change the way we look? Complaining is a waste of time. Stewing accomplishes nothing. It is worthless. But we know what will make us feel better. Colossians 2:7 talks about how God wants our life to “… overflow with joy and thanksgiving for all He has done.”
If we want an overflowing life rather than an overwhelming life, stop complaining and start being grateful. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 says, “Whatever happens, give thanks, because it is God’s will in Christ Jesus that you do this.”
