Thank you is a phrase that is so important to use especially in our relationship with God and Jesus Christ. No matter what is going on in our life, saying those two important words is vital. Here’s an example in the New Testament.
Luke 17:11-19 tells the story of Jesus’ encounter with ten lepers. When they saw Jesus approaching their village, they cried out, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” (verse 13 NLT) With a simple instruction from Him, they were healed. Their leprosy disappeared and their lives were changed forever.
Verse 15 says, “One of them, when he saw that he was healed, came back to Jesus, shouting, ‘Praise God!’” (NLT) One out of the ten gave thanks. That percentage surprised even the Lord Himself. In verses 17-18 Jesus asked, “Didn’t I heal ten men? Where are the other nine? Has no one returned to give glory to God except this foreigner?” (NLT)
It wasn’t so much that Jesus was offended by the inconsiderate reactions of the other nine. It was a concern that they were going to miss out on the blessings that come when we express our thanks to God. Notice verse 19, “Then He said to him, ‘Rise and go; your faith has made you well.’” (NIV) He received so much more because he gave thanks. Giving thanks doesn’t just change our attitude in life, but I believe it also changes God’s attitude toward us. Let’s give thanks no matter what and see how God will bless us.
