I remember running track in High School. I was more interested in impressing the girls in the stands than the race itself. When it comes to the race of life, we need a better motivation than I had. Hebrews 12:2 spells it out: “We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting Him, He endured the cross, disregarding its shame. How He is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.” (NLT)

We are to run the race for an audience of one: Jesus Christ. He is watching us, praying for us, and according to Hebrews 7:25, “He lives forever to intercede with God on [our] behalf.” (NLT) Stephen ran the race of life for Jesus and according to Acts 7:56 he said, “Look, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing in the place of honor at God’s right hand!” (NLT) Seeing Jesus gave him the ability to run the race and finish it.

For as long as Simon Peter kept his eyes on Jesus, he was able to walk on water. In Matthew 14:25-29 we read that Jesus came walking on the water. Peter said to Him, “Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come to you, walking on the water.” Jesus said come, so Peter walked on the water toward Jesus. (NLT) As long as Peter kept his eyes on Jesus, he was able to do the impossible.

We need to keep our eyes on Jesus. We may have disappointments and even devastations, but keeping our eyes on Jesus will always lift us up. Feelings may come and go, but Jesus will always be there for us so keep looking to Him.

Yours In Christ,
Rev. David Edgar
