This week I’m going to focus on the Biblical book of Hebrews. Today I’m just going to deal with the issue of faith. Hebrews 11:1 offers us a definition of faith: “Faith shows the reality of what we hope for; it is the evidence of things we cannot see.” (NLT) By faith I do not mean some lofty spiritual existence, but a practical, rubber-meets-the-road way of living.
For example, faith is essential to prayer. Sometimes our prayers aren’t answered because we simply don’t have the faith to believe. Hebrews 11:6 says, “And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who sincerely seek Him.” (NLT)
If we approach God thinking, “I don’t really believe this can happen,” then it doesn’t. We must pray with faith. But if we lack faith, then hear the words of a man to Jesus in Mark 9:24, “I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief.” (NLT) That prayer will work. We don’t need a super faith, but the faith the size of a mustard seed.
Faithful prayer involves a sense of expectation. We can know that God will give us His full attention. What concerns us concerns Him. He will respond according to His will and His will is greater than anything we could pray for. He may not answer our prayers with what we want, but He will answer our prayers with the greatest gift we could have: Himself!
Yours in Christ,
