If we doubt the goodness of God and decide what will make us happy, all kinds of problems begin. We can wind up overworked, overanxious, and overloaded – and generally overwhelmed. But God promises an overflowing life, not an overwhelmed life. Jesus said in John 10:10, “I have come that you might have life and have it abundantly.”

How do we experience an abundant, overflowing life? It’s by staying connected to Jesus. He said in John 15:5, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in Me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing.” What happens to a cluster of grapes when they are cut off of the vine? They die! The same is true for us. He is the source of an abundant life. John 15:11 says, “Your joy will overflow.”

The way to stay connected to Him is daily prayer and Bible study. Mark 1:35 tells us, “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where He prayed.” Notice He did that first, not later. If the Son of God needed that, shouldn’t we?

Sometimes we may not feel like doing that – do it anyway. Would it be God or the devil that was keeping us from prayer and Bible study? Who is going to win? If you haven’t already, develop a habit of spending daily time with Him for when we stay connected to Him, we’ll find our life overflowing with goodness and power and we’ll realize that’s all we really need.

In Christ,
Rev. David Edgar
