1 John 4:8 says, “God is love.” It does not say God has love, it says God is love. That’s the essence of who God is. He is love. There are other false images of who God is but obviously are not correct. And more, we were created as an object of God’s love. The reason that we have breath right now is this: God made us to simply love us. He created us as an object of His love. Now let’s get clear. God didn’t make us because He needed us. He wasn’t lonely. The reason we were made was simply to be loved by Him.
Next is the other side of that coin. Jesus was asked what was the most important commandment in Scripture. He answered in Matthew 22:37-38, “’Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment.” (NIV)
The most important thing in life is to know and to love God. The most important thing that we can know in life is that God created us to love us. The most important thing that we can do in life is to love Him back. The first thing that we need to do when we wake up in the morning is to allow God to love us. The next thing is to love Him back. More than anything else in all of life, we want to know God’s love for us and express our love for Him. That’s called the Christian way of living. Don’t just do it the first thing, but throughout the day and every day.
