Hebrews 4:7b quotes David, “Today when you hear His voice, don’t harden your hearts.” Here’s a modern example. A lawyer was trying to deliver an important paper to someone who was determined to avoid him. The man thought it was a subpoena so he went out of his way to avoid him. Fourteen years later and the man was in the hospital dying of cancer. The lawyer was admitted and assigned to the same room. The man said to the lawyer, “You never got me. You can serve your subpoena now because I don’t care.” The lawyer replied, “What subpoena? I was trying to give you a document that proved you inherited forty-five million dollars!”
Some people try to avoid the Christian message that is good news. Their hearts grow harder and they risk becoming calloused to the Gospel. One person was a man by the name of Saul of Tarsus. His heart was hardened. Maybe you know someone like that. Keep praying for them, stay present, and keep setting an example of your Christian faith. Sometimes the right phrase, spoken at the right time by the right person, can resonate in a life-changing way. Be prepared to answer questions and respond to challenges in a loving, thoughtful way. Who knows, even the hardest heart can be softened. We never know. The hard-hearted person we’re trying to reach just might be the next Paul!
