I remember our dad taking us four sons fishing along the ship channel in Corpus Christi. We weren’t catching anything, but a large tanker was coming by. I thought, “Boy this is great. A large ship is coming by and we get to see it up close.” However, none of us realized the wake behind the tanker and by the time we did, we weren’t wearing our life jackets and the anchor was still in the water. Needless to say, we were caught off guard and very frightened. It was a giant of a problem, but we survived.
Not all giants appear like this. Some are difficult situations, what seems like unsurmountable hurdles, challenges beyond our ability to solve. We all face giants and will as long as we live. Perhaps the final giant is what some call death. We can face temptations to go astray when we face these giants.
Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 10:12-13, “If you think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall. The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, He will show you a way out so that you can endure.”
I like that, “a way out.” With trust in Christ, every giant can be defeated including death as we live forever with Him. There is no temptation too compelling to resist. There is no giant that’s too big or too powerful for us. No matter how foolish our life can be sometimes, we still have everything in our relationship with Christ. We can overcome everything with Him.
In Christ, David Edgar
