Hebrews 12:1 says, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.” When you think about the huge crowd of witnesses of your faith, who do you think of? Who has gone before you that is now that huge crowd of witnesses? Is it a mother or father, a grandparent or a friend? I think of my pastor Don Pevey. He used to say that I was one of his “paint horses.” That meant he was in my corner and still is in Heaven.
But what is our part? “Let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up.” Have you ever tried to move from one house to another? In my ministry, we’ve moved from one parsonage to another. It was always amazing how much junk we had to throw out and not move. The same is true in our lives. Periodically, we need to jettison excess weight of what has slowed us down spiritually and let it go. Sometimes we carry around old stuff that is no longer relevant. Let’s do some spiritual “spring cleaning” this fall.
“Let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.” Two ladies in my water aerobics classes wear ancle weights. When they take them off, they say they feel so much lighter with a spring in their step. Let’s take off blaming others, circumstances and even God to put a spiritual spring in our step. It’s amazing how much lighter and brighter life can be.
In Christ,
Rev. David Edgar
